Easy Steps To Cut Cost Of Water
The drip, drip, drip of a leaky faucet or the trickle in a faulty toilet tank
can be maddening. Worse, it can cost you hundreds of dollars a year in wasted
water while depleting one of the earth's most precious resources.
"Some toilet leaks can send 50 gallons of water a day down the drain. A faucet
leak can waste up to 5,000 gallons in a year. The following is a checklist for
reducing your water bill:
Check for leaky toilets. Put a few drops of blue food coloring in the toilet
tank. If the color leaks into the bowl, it signals that the flapper needs to be
replaced.
Repair dripping faucets. Most leaks are the result of worn washer, which you can
replace easily in a few minutes. Ace Hardware carries repair kits for washer
less faucets.
Go low-flow. Install low-flow shower heads that reduce water use up to half
while still providing a luxuriant shower.
Use shower-off button. You can really reduce water consumption by using the
showerhead shut off while lathering up and then turning it on again to rinse
off.
