Clean
Paint won't adhere to dirt, stains, soap or grease. It's important to remove
residues by washing and rinsing wall before painting. Use a sponge and mild
solution of water and a mild cleaner to wash the wall, starting at the bottom to
prevent streaking. Be sure to rinse well from the top down with clear, cold
water to remove all soap film.
Dull and Dry
To remove residue, wash walls before sanding to prevent grinding the particles
into the surface. For most walls, you can sand with a fine grade of sandpaper
before washing. This is especially important if semi-gloss of gloss paint is on
the wall. It isn't necessary to sand off the old paint, just rough up the
surface so new paint will adhere. You may also use a tack cloth to pick up small
amounts of sanding dust.
Sound and Smooth
Surface irregularities will be more pronounced after painting, especially when
using a semi-gloss of gloss paint. Remove loose plaster, wood or flaking paint
with a scraper or putty knife. Patch the area and any other surface cracks.
Caulk any seams or other large gaps with a paintable caulk. Feather-sand the
edges of patched areas to prevent the patching from showing later. Be sure to
spot prime these areas before painting.
