Fire Prevention is a year round idea, so this is an ideal
month to make sure your home is protected against and prepared for fire
emergencies. Paul's Ace Hardware, says cooking equipment is the leading cause of
home fires in the United States. He suggests following these tips from the
National Fire Protection Association to help prevent home cooking fires
Be sure to keep an eye on food while it's on the stove. Unattended cooking is
the leading cause of home cooking fires and injuries. If you have to leave the
room, turn off the heat.
Make sure all your exterior doors and frames are of solid construction. Weak or
cracked doors are easy targets for forced entry by burglars.
Turn handles on pots and pans inward to avoid accidentally pulling or knocking
them off the stove.
Keep younger children away from appliances when cooking. If you allow older
children to cook, make sure you supervise them closely and teach them safe
cooking practices.
Keep all appliances and surfaces clean. Spilled food can ignite and cause a
fire. Keep things that can catch fire, like potholders and wooden utensils, away
from the heat.
Avoid wearing clothing with loose fitting sleeves. These can easily catch fire.
Also, try not to reach or lean over the stove by not storing items you use
directly over or behind the stove top.
Use caution with electrical appliances. Plug one appliance in an outlet at a
time. And be extra careful when working around water.
We, at Paul's Ace Hardware urges all homeowners to have a fire extinguisher and
smoke detector in the kitchen, as well as other areas of the house. Paul's Ace
